Andalusian Refuge in the Mountains
Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 by Moorish refugees fleeing the Reconquista in Spain. The blue-washed walls — a tradition brought by Jewish refugees in the 1930s — were believed to repel mosquitoes and symbolise spiritual purity.
